Our Story

WL3 Solutions was founded on one principle, to provide the best solutions for our customer's 3-D needs.  Our methods are derived from real-world experiences in commercial/defense ship building,  commercial/defense aerospace, manufacturing, composites, and precision metrology.  We combine our collective experience, lessons learned and cutting edge technology to produce a resolution for your challenge.

Will Austin, Founder, attended Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia.  While earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering and Technology, Will gained a passion for 3-D applications through his work for a local naval architectural firm and the university's machine shop.  Studying the theory and utilizing knowledge of design, engineering and manufacturing all at once proved to be priceless.  Upon graduation in 2004, Will began his career in the 3-D metrology field at Newport News Shipbuilding.  By gaining an engineering position in the dimensional control group, he continued his growth in the 3-D arena. During this time, Will learned about spatial transformations, laser trackers, laser scanning and 3-D metrology software.  After a few years of applying cutting edge technology, he moved into the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) side of the industry by securing an Application Engineer position at a premier metrology software company.  During his time working with the metrology software experts, he gained exposure to a multitude of precision measurement devices, automation, robotics and consulting.  These tools provided support to some of the world's leading manufactures such as Boeing, NASA, Electric Boat and Airbus.  Will transitioned to the service side of the metrology industry where he provided his customer base with top of the line metrology services and measurement equipment.  With these experiences and acquired knowledge, Will co-founded WL3 Solutions to provide solutions for 3-D challenges.

Raul Flores

Raul Flores, Founder, builds on over 30 years of experience in large scale manufacturing, automation, robotic and CNC machining, and composite manufacturing. Like Will, Raul began his career at Newport News Shipbuilding as an apprentice and worked with some of the industry's largest CNC machines.  From the shipyard Raul moved to commercial manufacturing with Canon where he specialized in PLC programming and high speed manufacturing.  Raul left Canon and helped form DLBA Robotics where he honed his composite manufacturing and machine skills for over 17 years.  Now, as a founder of WL3, Raul builds on his 30 years of knowledge to assist in solving WL3's customers' 3-D challenges.

Doug Blount, Partner, attended Virginia Tech where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and continued his graduate work at the University of Virginia completing his Master’s degree in Material Science and Engineering.  Doug began his career working for Hercules Aerospace (currently Orbital ATK) performing research and development in surface interactions with high solids composite systems.  Doug then moved to Canon Virginia where he managed the chemical manufacturing operations, process engineering, preventive maintenance, tool / die maintenance, and Quality Control.  He left Canon to start up and be the President of DLBA Robotics, a large scale CNC machining and mold tooling company supporting the aerospace, defense, and marine industries. He was responsible for process development, customer support and interaction, Quality Assurance, and regulatory compliance.  After 30 years of experience in the developing solutions in the aerospace, defense, and marine industries, Doug joined WL3 Solutions to help customers solve their 3-D challenges.
